A double-replacement reaction is a chemical change where there is an exchange of positive ions between 2 compounds. A good indicator of possible reaction types are the number of elements or compounds reacting. In a double-replacement reaction, 2 ionic compounds are the reactants, 2 new compounds are the products.


Where do they happen?

They generally take place in an aqueous solution and they often produce a precipitate, gas, or a molecular compound. For a double-replacement reaction to occur one of the products is only soluble, one of the products is a gas, or one of the products is a molecule compound.

How do you predict?

Another way of predicting the products of a double-replacement reaction is they do not involve transfer of electrons. The charges of ions do not change. The formulas of the products are based on the charges of ions. To successfully predict the products of the reactions, the correct formulas of the reactant ions must be identified.
